Rewrite the following sentences in the ways instructed:

1. Smith _______ (learn) to drive for some years now, but he still _______ (not pass) his driving test.
(Use the proper form of the verbs in the brackets)
Ans: Smith has been learning to drive for some years now, but he still has not passed his driving test.

2. I have to work as hard as I can.
(Replace the modal auxiliary by another showing ‘obligation’)
Ans: I must work as hard as I can.

3. Olivia (remember) the day she first (go) to school.
(Use the proper form of the verbs in the brackets)
Ans: Olivia remembered the day she had first gone to school.

4. People generally assume that money brings happiness.
(Rewrite the sentence beginning with ‘Money brings happiness….’)
Ans: Money brings happiness is the general assumption of people. OR
‘Money brings happiness’ is what people generally assume.

5. As soon as I reached the platform, the train left.
(Use ‘No sooner ….. than’)
Ans: No sooner did I reach the platform than the train left.

6. No sooner do I reach the office than I will make the announcement.
(Use ‘as soon as’)
Ans: I will make the announcement as soon as I reach the office. OR
As soon as I reach the office, I will make the announcement.

7. He (learn) English for five years, but he can’t even read a newspaper.
(Use the Present Perfect Continuous form of the verb in the bracket)
Ans: He has been learning English for five years, but he can’t even read a newspaper.

8. Doctor said to Sophia, “You will have to stay in bed for a week or more.”
(Rewrite in Indirect Speech)
Ans: Doctor told Sophia that she would have to stay in bed for a week or more.

9. As soon as the thief ran out of the jail, the guard fired at him.
(Use ‘No sooner ….. than’)
Ans: No sooner did the thief run out of the jail than the guard fired at him.

10. It is better to starve than to beg.
(Rewrite using the gerund forms of the underlined words)
Ans: Starving is better than begging.

11. Father said to the teacher, “Is my son doing well?”
(Change into Indirect Narration)
Ans: Father asked the teacher whether his son was doing well.

(Punctuate the sentence)
Ans: “Come, I know what you mean,” cried Mr George.

13. Mr. Thomas _______ (live) in London since 1960.
(Use the proper form of the verb in the bracket)
Ans: Mr. Thomas has been living in London since 1960.

14. Every country has a government. It looks after its progress.
(Combine using the infinitive form of the underlined verb)
Ans: Every country has a government to look after its progress.

15. The little girl saw a beautiful flower and gave a cry of joy.
(Rewrite using a present participle)
Ans: Seeing a beautiful flower, the little girl gave a cry of joy.

16. Education is the single most crucial issue.
(Rewrite using ‘as……as’)
Ans: No other single issue is as crucial as education.

17. This is where the vicious circle starts.
(Rewrite without ‘where’)
Ans: The vicious circle starts here.

18. She is quick and careful enough to stop it as soon as it reaches the right figure.
(Rewrite using ‘No sooner ….. than’)
Ans: No sooner does it reach the right figure than she is quick and careful enough to stop it.

19. John performs his role with zeal and enthusiasm.
(Frame a Wh-question so as to get the underlined part as an answer)
Ans: How does John perform his role?

20. After exploring all visible solutions to this problem, I have successfully launched an indigenous scheme.
(Rewrite using the noun form of the underlined word)
Ans: After the exploration of all visible solutions to this problem, I have successfully launched an indigenous scheme.
